Outerwear sizing is different from tops
A jacket has to fit over whatever you wear underneath, so sizing up is normal rather than a mistake. Measure the chest of the thickest layer you plan to wear beneath it and add allowance for movement. Sleeve length is the second thing people get wrong: it is measured from the centre back neck, not from the shoulder, and the two numbers are not close.
Shells, coatings and water resistance
Water resistance comes from either a coating or a tightly woven fabric, and coatings wear off after a season or two of use. Listings rarely state hydrostatic ratings at this price point, so the practical test is the fabric description and whether seams are sealed at all. Assume a low-cost shell handles light rain and nothing more, and plan accordingly.
Shipping bulky outerwear
Padded and quilted jackets trap air and are among the most expensive garments to ship by volume. Compression bags help substantially, though down and heavy padding should not be compressed for long periods. If you are ordering a jacket together with lighter items, ship the light items first and give the jacket its own parcel with proper compression rather than cramming everything into one box.
